Chiropractic Care for Children
Many people consider that chiropractic care is for adults only. Children can also benefit greatly from regular chiropractic care. Injuries that children sustain during their everyday lives and while running, jumping or playing sports can cause many symptoms that can be managed by chiropractors. By the time we have reached the age of 13, research shows that we have taken, at least, one thousand falls. Our children deserve the opportunity to be at their best. Chiropractic care can help remove obstacles leading to improved function and optimal lives..
Chiropractic Based on Scientific Fact
Since its beginning, chiropractic has been based on the scientific fact that the nervous system controls the function of every cell, tissue, organ and system of the body. While the brain is protected by the skull, the spinal cord is more vulnerable, covered by 24 moving vertebrae. When these bones lose their normal motion or position, they can irritate the nervous system. This disrupts the function of the tissues or organs these nerves control; this is called vertebral subluxation complex. This impacts the neurological function of children.
The Journal of Pediatric, Maternal & Family Health provides compelling clinical evidence illustrated in thousands of case studies that children receiving chiropractic care have greatly benefited from the adjustments. In a case of a 4-year-old boy diagnosed with autism, the improvements over the course of an eight week period were remarkable as stated by his parents. Their original concern was his delay in language development.
The Autism Treatment Evaluation Checklist (ATEC) was used to assess effectiveness of chiropractic care on four areas of impairments: Speech/language/communication improved 34.8%, Sociability improved by 50%, sensory/cognitive awareness improved by 50%, health/physical/behavior improved by 31.4%, and the patient had an improvement in their overall score by 40.6% over 8 weeks¹.
In another case discussed in the Journal, a three-month old infant with chief complaint of colic, crying, screaming without noticeable causation, increased bowel movements and urination –received care. After just one month under chiropractic care, the symptoms were resolved.²
There are numerous other cases, research papers and studies showing the efficacy of chiropractic care for children and pregnant women.³ The International Chiropractic Pediatric Association offers the largest compilation of scientific research on chiropractic care for children.
My Family, My Patients and Chiropractic
As the dad of seven amazing children, I have 30+ years of experience caring for my own and many other children. I always adapt care to fit the spinal needs of my young patients. Children ranging in ages from newborns on up have benefited from my care. Whether I was providing care for my children’s aches or pains, from headaches to ear infections, the adjustments would provide the release of nerve interference that would allow for their bodies’ innate ability to heal.
“When my brother Chris got sick I started feeling different about everything. My friends told me that they did not like how I was acting because I took everything the wrong way. I didn’t think anything could make me feel better about what happened to my brother.
One day my mom took my brother and I to Dr. Larry’s office. I didn’t think it would help at first but my mom brought me back again. After a few times, I started to see a big difference in how I felt about things. My friends said that they saw a big difference in how I acted about things too.
I love it here and have met so many great people here! It makes me feel so happy to be here and it makes me so calm.”
Olivia, age 11
Why Chiropractic Care for Children
Many children experience trauma at birth which affects their body and nervous system. Later, childhood activities — including learning to walk, participating in sports or riding a bicycle or skateboard — may also cause spinal health problems, or make them worse.
Even injuries that appear to be minor — such as a fall from a bicycle or roller blades — can damage other parts of the body, including the pelvis, skull, spine and limbs. Chiropractors are uniquely trained to identify problems in these areas.
Chiropractors can also determine whether “growing pains” are signs of more severe health problems. Regular chiropractic care for children may be able to head off problems that many adults experience later in life.
Caring for Childhood Conditions
One of the primary types of chiropractic care for children is treating back and neck pain or other issues related to the spine. Chiropractors can check children as young as newborns for problems, especially those related to the health of their spine and nervous system.
Chiropractors may also be able to help with other childhood conditions, including:
- Bed wetting
- Birth trauma
- Chronic ear infections
- Respiratory conditions
- Speech disorders
- And many more
“Dr. Larry was loving and caring to Emily! He took my crying baby from my hands and began “entraining” her immediately. With his gentle touch and the soothing music playing in the background, within minutes, the crying stopped and Emily started to relax and began playing with Dr. Larry. Since Emily’s very first visit, she continues to be more calm and comfortable, her head more mobile and in noticeably less pain. We had a wonderful experience with Dr. Larry and now I bring my other family members in for care. I am also much calmer, less anxious, relieved and happier.
Happy baby makes happy mommy!”
Types of Care for Children
When chiropractors work with children, they provide the same highly skilled and attentive care that adults receive. They use a hands-on, drug-free approach. Visits include a physical exam, diagnosis and adjustments. In the case of children, chiropractors use a very gentle approach, suitable to the age of the child. Utilizing a combination of Network Spinal Analysis, gentle chiropractic adjustments and other safe and effective modalities, allows for a child to heal naturally and fully in a short time.
Children who already have a regular pediatrician — who provides medications and treats serious illnesses — can also benefit from a chiropractor. Much of the work that chiropractors do with children is preventative wellness care, helping their spines stay healthy as they grow. Give your child the best possible opportunity to thrive. It’s never too early. Chiropractors ARE for all ages. Get started with your child today!
